Summary

The road in front of Dr。 Louis Creed's rural Maine home frequently claims the lives of neighborhood pets。 Louis has recently moved from Chicago to Ludlow with his wife Rachel, their children and pet cat。 Near their house, local children have created a cemetery for the dogs and cats killed by the steady stream of transports on the busy highway。 Deeper in the woods lies another graveyard, an ancient Indian burial ground whose sinister properties Louis discovers when the family cat is killed。

This book was good overall, the beginning until about halfway through was honestly boring but it picked up after that。

To be honest it wasn't as good as I thought it would be。 I do still recommend it because Stephen King is am excellent writer but it was pretty meh compared to "Carrie," "Cujo," or some of King's other works。 To be honest it wasn't as good as I thought it would be。 I do still recommend it because Stephen King is am excellent writer but it was pretty meh compared to "Carrie," "Cujo," or some of King's other works。 。。。more

Didn't enjoy the ending and it had the average Stephen King writing with long paragraphs about nothing。 Although it was well thought out and it made me hold on until the very end。 Didn't enjoy the ending and it had the average Stephen King writing with long paragraphs about nothing。 Although it was well thought out and it made me hold on until the very end。 。。。more

When this book was good, it was very, very good。 I could totally see why this became such a cultural touchpoint - like I knew a lot of the broad plot strokes even though I'd never read it or seen any of the versions of it on film。 But the creeping dread, the intense scenes of spooky darkness when they come were amazing。 It also makes you feel like you're in King's characteristic rural Maine what with Jud's folksiness。Unfortunately there were also。 。 。 other scenes。 Puffed up fluff I had to get t When this book was good, it was very, very good。 I could totally see why this became such a cultural touchpoint - like I knew a lot of the broad plot strokes even though I'd never read it or seen any of the versions of it on film。 But the creeping dread, the intense scenes of spooky darkness when they come were amazing。 It also makes you feel like you're in King's characteristic rural Maine what with Jud's folksiness。Unfortunately there were also。 。 。 other scenes。 Puffed up fluff I had to get through to get to the good stuff (I felt it could easily be 100+ pages shorter!), or even worse, weird good-ol-boy stuff like talking about women's boobs at inappropriate times, or flat out -isms。 Racism, sexism, ableism, it's got a whole list。 And in the end。。。 I settled on a 4/5。 The good parts are really good! I just wish someone could come cut out the bad parts ;) 。。。more

There’s a certain unrefined charm to Stephen King’s early works that separate them from his more recent efforts。 While there’s a lot of things about this book that are very much reflective of the time it was written, things that are problematic and should be acknowledged- such as it’s use of negative stereotypes against indigenous peoples- when you strip those elements away you’re left with a really good horror story as well as commentary on the nature of grief and how we come to accept our own There’s a certain unrefined charm to Stephen King’s early works that separate them from his more recent efforts。 While there’s a lot of things about this book that are very much reflective of the time it was written, things that are problematic and should be acknowledged- such as it’s use of negative stereotypes against indigenous peoples- when you strip those elements away you’re left with a really good horror story as well as commentary on the nature of grief and how we come to accept our own mortality。 It would be wonderful if the problematic elements weren’t there in the first place, but it is what it is。 I think anyone who reads Stephen King or knows much about his works especially from this era kinda already knows that; but for new readers entering this I just wanna hammer in that note。 The second half of this book is where the story really shines。 It’s dark, sends shivers down your spine, has some clever callbacks to other SK works, and all the while throws a poignant and accurate portrayal of the desperation and shock that first slaps a person in the face when they experience such traumatic grief。 。。。more

Every year, I try to read at least one Stephen King book。 I decided that I would get this year’s book out of the way since I have a loftier reading goal than last year。 Having been scarred by the movie at a young age, I avoided Pet Sematary for the longest time。 Let the record show I am still just as scarred from the book。 What is King’s darkest book so far is also his most effective。 King himself notes in the beginning of the novel, that this was the scariest novel he’s ever written and that it Every year, I try to read at least one Stephen King book。 I decided that I would get this year’s book out of the way since I have a loftier reading goal than last year。 Having been scarred by the movie at a young age, I avoided Pet Sematary for the longest time。 Let the record show I am still just as scarred from the book。 What is King’s darkest book so far is also his most effective。 King himself notes in the beginning of the novel, that this was the scariest novel he’s ever written and that it almost wasn’t published。 Pet Sematary having been spoiled for me a long time ago due to watching the movie with my father at the tender age of five, I thought I knew what awaited me。 I was wrong。 Dealing the sudden loss of his son, Louis Creed buries his son in the titular cemetery after finding that his daughter’s deceased cat was resurrected after being buried in the same cemetery。 This novel deals with loss, coping, and how people view death。 Not an uncommon topic, to be sure, but King’s delivery and painting of idyllic scenery filled me with dread as I knew the events that were to come。 Something the movie leaves out is the fleshing out of Jud Crandall and the inclusion of his wife Norma。 In the film, Jud is the old man who shows Louis the cemetery and warns him that dead is better。 In the novel, Jud reminded me of my own grandfather。 I would sit on the porch with him and watch the Alabama sunset before eating dinner。 My grandmother, who is more sarcastic than Norma but just as kind and caring, would spend the day with me while we waited on my grandfather to return from work。 I couldn’t help but be transported to 2011 when my grandfather passed away when Jud was killed。 Emotions I thought I worked through came rushing back as memories of my grandfather surfaced。 Louis and I were going through loss at the same time。 This made the novel more impactful, even if for more personal reasons。 While this is going to be a one-time read for me, I find this to be far scarier than any of the books written by Stephen King that I’ve read so far。 The content is the best and worst thing about this book。 Like Ellie and Rachel Creed, these are not emotions I would like to visit often, but like Norma Crandall said, “We should have a nodding acquaintance with death。” I listened to the audiobook narrated by Michael C。 Hall of Dexter fame。 His haunting cadence towards the end of the novel added even more impact to the study and helped make this one of the audiobooks I’ve listened to。Due to the emotional impact and the effectiveness of this book, I give Pet Sematary five out of five stars。 。。。more

Stephen King in his prime!I’ve only recently started reading his books, with this being the second one I’ve read, and I was by no means disappointed。Whilst being incredibly easy to read, his writing has a way of giving you the chills when you least expect it。 This one will stay with me for a while, until I find my next Stephen King to sink my teeth into!

SpookyThis was one spooky story! OMG, it made the hair rise on the back of my neck, and the ending was haunting。 I listened to the audio version, which, IMO, added to the sinister quality of the story。 I highly recommend this Stephen King novel。 Happy reading!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I truly don't understand why people say this is King's scariest book。 It's 80% filler and that filler worms its way into the creepy parts and thus making them not creepy。 Louis and Rachel were stock characters who weren't interesting enough to Garner nearly 600 pages that were mostly about the tedium of their life。 After 400 pages the main plot point still had not happened。The whole thing could have been solved by installing a fence。 I truly don't understand why people say this is King's scariest book。 It's 80% filler and that filler worms its way into the creepy parts and thus making them not creepy。 Louis and Rachel were stock characters who weren't interesting enough to Garner nearly 600 pages that were mostly about the tedium of their life。 After 400 pages the main plot point still had not happened。The whole thing could have been solved by installing a fence。 。。。more

My goodness what a read this book was! This was my first Stephen King book and most certainly will not be my last。 This book really gets you thinking。。what extent would you go to bring back the ones you loved most? I’m still shocked and mind blown at this book and the what ifs。 Highly highly recommend。

Really phenomenal build of tension and suspense as the pain of grief grows throughout the novel, but fell a little short for me in the climax as something great became something fairly average。 So, my four stars is an average; 5 for the first 3/4ths of the book, 3 for the conclusion。

I feel like this book didn't age well。 The racist undertones about the Indigenous burial ground didn't sit right with me throughout the last half of the book。 I get that this was written almost 40 years ago, but the fact that this book sounds like white people suffering because of Indigenous people just makes me feel uncomfortable。 I doubt that's what King meant to do, but all the same it just wasn't that enjoyable。 I feel like this book didn't age well。 The racist undertones about the Indigenous burial ground didn't sit right with me throughout the last half of the book。 I get that this was written almost 40 years ago, but the fact that this book sounds like white people suffering because of Indigenous people just makes me feel uncomfortable。 I doubt that's what King meant to do, but all the same it just wasn't that enjoyable。 。。。more
